HI! Imo, the whole movie is a metaphor for dealing with loss via breakup. The whole thing is just her trip, her experience of it. The family doesn"t understand exactly what she"s going through, and cuz of that are not there for her (don"t respond to her) so they die, it"s about feeling alone in the process of letting go, from denying the issues, to regaining clarity and finally, personal strength. And all throug the eyes of a girl depicted as a a character with inferiority complex and/or impostor syndrome, smthng many ppl keep struggling with on a regular basis) who by the end finally doesn"t apologise for her own choices, and in this instance- burning the bridge (the temple) instead she smiles from relief. It"s rly a beautiful movie ? but I def wouldn"t label it as horror. Maybe a psychological drama/ thriller. Reminded me a bit of the Holy Mountain from Jodorowsy (you are excrement, you can change yourself into gold. also a MUST watch.
Dani doesn"t actually speak Swedish in the dancing scene, they"re both speaking gibberish but somehow understand each other. 17 minutes of spoilers and I still have no idea what this movie is about. Great analysis my friend, although I think there a greater aspect missed. This movie is heavily filled with occultism and it can be said it"s actually more of an initiation ritual than a film. Only very little is actually fiction. If you"re interested in knowing the whole meaning of the symbolism used throughout this movie I seriously recommend you this video, not everything is entirely related to the movie, but the way it is explained is probably the most accurate interpretation of the meaning behind it. Cant wait to see what Aster does next. Surprised at all the dislikes for this movie, thought it is was freaky brilliant, amazing choreography! That piss scene was hilarious and scary, they pulled that off nicely! Midsommar is underrated. and underappreciated, you have to maybe watch it with low energy. If you"re in the mood or looking for jump scares, this isn"t the choice, but if you"re ready for a slow burn horror about a strange death obsessed witchcraft cult in of all places Sweden, this movie is haunting, freaky fun. But, Stuckmann"s view that the characters weren"t as developed as they could have been isn;t altogether false either, thumbs up on his review.

There are two different shots that I could find that use this effect in the film "Midsommar", one in which there is a swirly distorted effect around a head, and another where general swirls around the screen appear. While it looks like a keyframed liquify effect from PhotoShop, I"m not sure if it can be recreated in after effects. Duplicate your layer twice, so that you have three copies. On the top layer mask out the person. Set the mask feather to around 30px. Copy and paste the mask to the other two layers. On the middle layer, set the mask feather to 60 and the mask expansion to 60. (can be adjusted to suit). On the bottom layer, set the mask to subtract mode and add a "Turbulent Displace" effect to the layer.
